How acupuncture can help endometriosis related pain
Acupuncture works to stimulate the nervous system and causes the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being. Stimulation of certain acupuncture points have been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress.
Read a success story from one of our lovely patients who found pain relief from acupuncture.
The benefits have not only helped with my pain, but I’m sleeping better, my skin is clearer, my energy levels are higher and I feel so much healthier. I felt relief after just one session and for each week that went by it got better and better.

Laura's story
I started seeing Kimberly at Life + Lemons after suffering with Endometriosis for 8 years, four surgeries later and my pain was impacting my daily life. My anxiety was sky high and me and my partner had been ttc for our first baby for 9months. I researched acupuncture as a way to help my endometriosis and fertility and founds the life and lemons page. I sent an enquiry and almost immediately received such a lovely reply back scheduling a video call. Kim was so kind, genuine and caring and made me feel supported and that she would try her best to help me!
During my first session the clinic was so lovely and inviting, Kim welcomed me with her heart and made me feel at ease. She explained about the different points of the body she was using and most importantly she listened. She listened to how I was feeling, I didn’t feel alone! I kept going weekly and noticed the most magical transformation in my pain. I took on board all of Kim’s advice with supplements, diet, exercises and felt my health become the best it’s been. I still go for appointments once every 3-4 weeks and absolutely love them. I was very nervous at first and wondered how people got on with needles being put in but honestly it’s the most relaxing, calming hour of my week!
I chose life +lemons because Kim specialised in women’s health and fertility and the way she came across as a person was so important to me she really does care! The benefits have not only helped with my pain, but I’m sleeping better, my skin is clearer, my energy levels are higher and I feel so much healthier. I felt relief after just one session and for each week that went by it got better and better. I would and have recommended acupuncture to so many people! My sister has started having some for her migraines (at another clinic as she doesn’t live in Sheffield) and it’s helped her loads! I have told so many people about Life + Lemons and it has helped give me my life back!! If I could sum up my acupuncture experience with Kim at Life+ Lemons it would be – Magical, holistic and renewing. Thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart for being such both a wonderful, nurturing, caring and knowledgeable practitioner but also such a genuinely lovely person with a heart of gold.
Thank you

Here is some useful information about how acupuncture works to combat endometriosis related pain…
Endometriosis is a chronic condition characterised by growth of endometrial tissue in sites other than the uterus, most commonly in the pelvic cavity, but also in other parts of the body.
This ectopic tissue responds to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle, with subsequent bleeding, inflammation, and pain.
It has been shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically be of benefit in people with endometriosis by:
- providing pain relief – by stimulating nerves located in muscles and other tissues, acupuncture leads to release of endorphins and other neurohumoral factors, and changes the processing of pain in the brain and spinal cord.
- reducing inflammation – by promoting release of vascular and immunomodulatory factors.
- regulating levels of prostaglandins.
- combining acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine for endometriosis has been shown in animal studies to down-regulate the abnormal increase of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) levels that is associated with ectopic activity of endometrial cells. The treated rats had reduced areas of ectopic tissue. MMP-2 is required for the anchoring of the placenta to the uterine wall in pregnancy but over-production can lead to endometriosis.
