Menopause

Menopause is a fact of life for many women. It occurs when women stop menstruating. The time before menopause when women gradually produce less oestrogen is called perimenopause. As women transition from perimenopause into menopause they may experience: hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness, night sweats, weight gain, mood swings, changes in libido.

Some women go through the menopause and experience only minor symptoms. Others experience severe symptoms. Some vitamins may help ease menopause symptoms and support overall health.

As oestrogen levels in the body decrease, your risk of developing some conditions increases. This includes: osteoporosis, heart disease, urinary incontinence.

Here are some vitamins that help minimize the symptoms of low estrogen…

Period Pain

It’s no secret that PMS has a bad rap. We’ve all heard the horror stories, and some of us have lived them. Short for premenstrual syndrome, PMS describes the collection of symptoms that women typically experience one to two weeks before their period’s onset. Nearly all menstruating women can say that they’ve had some degree of PMS in their lifetime.

The list of PMS symptoms is surprisingly vast: by some estimates, over 150 symptoms have been attributed to PMS. Common physical symptoms include bloating, cramps, and breast tenderness. Emotional symptoms include irritability, depression, and mood swings. There is no single, straightforward explanation as to what causes PMS, though it’s often attributed to hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle. While minor symptoms can be merely disruptive, acute symptoms are debilitating. Whatever the severity, PMS is commonly thought of as an unwelcome monthly occurrence.

Although you can’t necessarily erase all signs of PMS, studies show that its symptoms can be reduced through focused attention to diet and supplementation. Below are our recommendations:

Multi Vitamin B Complex: 1-2 capsules daily – Nutrigold

  • Vitamin B1 – contributes to normal psychological function and normal function of the heart.

  • Folate – contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy and has a role in the process of cell division. 400µg daily folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.
  • Vitamin B12 – contributes to normal red blood cell formation. Vitamin B12 is naturally found in fish, dairy produce, organ meats, beef, and pork. This means that vegetarians and vegans often choose it as a regular supplement.
  • Choline – contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism; normal lipid metabolism and maintenance of normal liver function.
  • Inositol – associated with B vitamins, inositol plays an important role in cell communication and hormones that regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Biotin – contributes to maintenance of normal hair and skin.

Magnesium Threonate: 1-2 capsules daily – Cytoplan

  • Magnesium is an important mineral necessary for the proper functioning of almost every system in the human body.
  • Several studies suggest that it plays a role in anxiety.
    • A 2017 systematic review looked at the results of 18 different studies. The researchers found that magnesium supplements may improve measures of anxiety in people vulnerable to the condition, but also that the quality of evidence is currently poor.
    • A short 2016 review study reports that people with anxiety related to premenstrual syndrom benefited from taking magnesium supplements.

People can take magnesium supplements or obtain the nutrient by eating the following high magnesium foods:

    • whole wheat
    • spinach
    • quinoa
    • almonds and cashews
    • dark chocolate
    • black beans

  • A 2017 study found that taking vitamin D supplements improved both depression and anxiety in women with type 2 dabetes.

Ashwagandha

  • Ashwagandha is a plant and the root and berry is used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of reasons. This ranges from tackling anxiety, bipolar disorder, balance, asthma, sleep issues as well as increasing the chances of fertility and one’s libido.
  • the primary property in adaptogens like ashwagandha is that it helps to regulate cortisol levels in the body, and in turn helping to manage stress and adrenal fatigue issues
  • an overall rejuvenator and tonic for the body

Krill Oil +/or Flaxseed Oil (Vegan): 2 capsules daily – Cytoplan

  • Brain membranes contain a high proportion of these fats, and human studies suggest that a lack of omega-3s/fish oils in the brain may induce various behavioral and psychiatric disorders.
  • Anti-depressants and fish oils work in a similar way; primarily through serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)  although natural treatments like fish oil are becoming increasingly more preferable and popular.

Our chosen + reliable supplement suppliers

Cytoplan

Cytoplan is a unique science-based supplement company exclusively supplying the needs of health care professionals and their patients. Cytoplan was founded in 1990, by practitioners with many years experience in nutrition science.

Their emphasis is on quality, innovation and efficacy of product and Cytoplan has been a leader in the field of food-based supplementation for many years. They work closely with Doctors and scientists to produce products, which are highly bio-effective, truly innovative and backed by research and studies. They have a reputation for quality, integrity, innovation and excellent service.

Cytoplan consider that the supplements most appropriate and safe for human ingestion are those in which the nutrients are presented in the same form as those in food – as the nutrients are in their Food State and Wholefood supplements. These are bio-active nutrient complexes containing all the associated food factors in which they occur in nature. If a substance is appropriate to metabolic activity, you do not need high levels – and that is fundamental to our nutritional philosophy.

Cytoplan are owned by a charitable organisation and we make regular donations of supplements to charities and those in need. They aim to make a significant contribution to the health of our customers and this is more important to them than profit.

All their products are conceived by common sense, grounded in science and proven with results. Cytoplan products are for those who are serious about health, trust that nature holds the key to real health and want a company they can believe in.

What’s in a name?

‘Cyto’ is Greek for ‘Cell’, the basic structural and functional unit of any living thing, the “building blocks of life”. So Cytoplan is interpreted as a plan for Cells, or Cell Plan. They seek to achieve this through scientific and natural nutritional support, represented through our supplements and educational programme.

‘Cyto’ also originates from the Greek word meaning hollow vessel or container, hence the relationship with Cell. This is depicted in our logo by the flask. The flask also represents science, and the science based approach of our company – our product innovation is driven by the latest science based evidence.
