Acupuncture for Back Pain in Sheffield
When your back hurts, sitting at a desk, walking or sleeping comfortably can become hard work. At Life + Lemons in Nether Edge, Sheffield, we help you understand your symptoms and explore a practical plan for pain and movement.
Integrated healthcare
Personalised care for back pain
Back pain can follow an injury, build gradually or keep returning. We ask where it hurts, what changes it, how long it has been present and whether you have leg symptoms, numbness or weakness.
We consider work, activity, sleep and previous investigations. Understanding the pattern helps us discuss whether acupuncture fits your needs and how it can sit alongside movement and rehabilitation.

How does acupuncture work for back pain?
How does acupuncture influence pain?
Needling stimulates sensory nerves, sending signals into the spinal cord and brain. Research investigates the release of the body’s pain-modulating chemicals and changes in how pain is processed.
Can acupuncture help chronic lower back pain?
Trials assess pain intensity and back-related function. A Cochrane review found that results differed when acupuncture was compared with no treatment, usual care or sham acupuncture. This matters when interpreting headlines about “success rates”.
What if pain travels down your leg?
Pain into the leg, particularly with tingling, numbness or weakness, needs assessment for a nerve-related pattern. Our sciatica page explains the recent trial for chronic sciatica from a herniated disc and the symptoms that need urgent medical attention.
Acupuncture for back pain: the evidence
Cochrane research suggests that acupuncture may improve some outcomes for chronic non-specific low back pain. Results differ according to the comparison treatment and the certainty of the evidence.
NICE NG59 currently advises against offering acupuncture for low back pain with or without sciatica. We explain the research and guidance when discussing your options.
What to expect from your Sheffield appointment
Your first appointment includes your health history, symptoms, medication and goals, followed by treatment where appropriate. Tell us about any physiotherapy or rehabilitation plan you are following.
For pain travelling into the leg, we assess the pattern separately and consider whether further clinical assessment is needed.
New difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or bottom, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs needs emergency assessment.
