Discuss your pregnancy care

“My baby was breech at 36 weeks and I was feeling a little hopeless about getting him to turn. I had never had acupuncture before but read it can help so I decided to try it. Hannah was so kind and explained everything to me really well. It really got the baby wriggling and he turned head down that evening. I am so grateful!!”

Integrated healthcare

Pregnancy support that sees the whole of you

Whether you have conceived naturally, after IVF or following a previous loss, we make room for both the physical symptoms and the emotional experience of pregnancy.

Kimberley brings degree-level acupuncture training and additional fertility support training with Naava Carman. We consider your pregnancy stage, medical history, maternity care and what matters most to you, then agree a clear plan alongside your midwife or obstetric team.

Our focus is practical: less intrusive nausea, more comfortable movement and time to rest. We review your response rather than recommend the same schedule for everyone.

How can acupuncture help during pregnancy?

Morning sickness, nausea + vomiting

Pregnancy nausea can last all day and make food, work and everyday life difficult. Acupuncture may reduce symptom severity and can be used alongside prescribed anti-sickness medication.

A 2023 randomised trial of 352 women found a modest additional reduction in nausea and vomiting scores with acupuncture compared with sham treatment. Responses vary. Read the trial.

At Life + Lemons: we track nausea, vomiting and your ability to eat and drink, and can show you gentle wrist acupressure. If you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine or losing weight, contact your maternity team promptly for assessment for possible hyperemesis.

Early pregnancy after IVF or previous loss

A positive test does not always bring instant reassurance. Waiting for scans or remembering a previous loss can make the early weeks emotionally demanding.

We offer continuity of care, time to talk and gentle treatment focused on symptoms and relaxation, while helping you prepare questions for your fertility or maternity team. Acupuncture has not been shown to prevent miscarriage or guarantee a healthy pregnancy. Continue prescribed medication and planned scans.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

A systematic review of safety found few adverse effects when acupuncture was correctly applied, although reporting was incomplete. Temporary bruising, soreness or light-headedness can occur; no treatment is entirely risk-free.

We review your history, medications and any pregnancy complications. Point selection, stimulation and positioning are adapted to your pregnancy stage, with supported side-lying or a comfortable reclined position where appropriate.

Pelvic girdle pain, back pain + sciatica symptoms

Pain around the pubic bone, buttocks, hips or lower back can make walking, stairs and turning in bed difficult. Pelvic girdle pain, sometimes called SPD, involves the pelvic joints and surrounding muscles. Pain travelling into the leg needs assessment to understand whether nerves or referred pain are involved.

A randomised trial of 386 pregnant women found less pelvic girdle pain when acupuncture was added to standard care. This supports considering acupuncture within a wider plan; individual results vary. Read the trial.

At Life + Lemons: we review pain with everyday movements and its effect on sleep. We can recommend pelvic health physiotherapy so symptom relief sits alongside advice on movement, load and strength.

Sleep, stress + feeling overwhelmed

Discomfort, frequent trips to the toilet and a busy mind can all disturb sleep. Pregnancy after fertility treatment or loss can leave you feeling watchful when others expect you to feel excited.

Treatment offers protected time to rest and may help you feel more settled. We explore what is interrupting sleep and agree practical steps. Pregnancy-specific evidence for insomnia and anxiety is limited, so we measure your response and help you access specialist support when needed.

Heartburn, constipation + fatigue

Hormonal changes can slow bowel movements, while increasing pressure from your baby can contribute to reflux. Fatigue may reflect poor sleep, nausea or the extra demands of pregnancy, but persistent exhaustion can also need blood tests or a maternity review.

We discuss these symptoms as part of your whole health picture. Evidence for acupuncture specifically treating pregnancy heartburn, constipation or fatigue is limited. Your midwife, GP or pregnancy-trained nutritional therapist can help with appropriate advice and treatment.

Breech baby + moxibustion

Moxibustion uses warmth from burning dried mugwort near an acupuncture point on the little toe. It is distinct from needling and may be considered for breech presentation, often around 33–35 weeks, following discussion with your maternity team.

A 2023 Cochrane review found that adding moxibustion to usual care probably reduces non-head-down presentation at birth. It probably makes little or no difference to caesarean rates; safety reporting was incomplete. Read the review.

Contact us promptly after breech presentation is identified to discuss suitability and timing. We explain risks including burns and smoke irritation. Continue maternity guidance on scans, external cephalic version (ECV) and birth planning. Do not try moxa without individual instruction.

Birth preparation from around 36 weeks

Appointments focus on comfort, rest and feeling supported as your due date approaches. We review pelvic or back discomfort, sleep, birth preferences and maternity recommendations. Weekly sessions from around 36 weeks may suit some women, with timing agreed individually.

Research suggests possible effects on cervical readiness, but has not established reliable induction of labour or a reduction in caesareans. We do not promise a shorter labour or a particular birth outcome.

Your due date + practical acupressure

Approaching or past your due date? We can discuss supportive treatment alongside your maternity plan. Acupuncture does not replace recommended monitoring or medical induction and should not delay either.

We can discuss acupressure for comfort, with advice on when to use it and when to stop. Explore our pregnancy acupressure guide and ask which advice fits your stage of pregnancy.

Pregnancy acupuncture: what does the research show?

Research is most useful when it relates to the symptom you want help with. Trials support considering acupuncture for pregnancy nausea and pelvic girdle pain, although benefit varies. Moxibustion has separate evidence for breech presentation.

Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves and may influence pain processing and the body’s own pain-modulating systems. These mechanisms help explain its use for comfort, but do not prove every pregnancy claim. Evidence is less established for pregnancy insomnia, digestive complaints and labour induction.

We discuss what is known, agree realistic goals and review whether care is helping you.

Second trimester · 14–27 weeks

Comfort as your body changes

Review pelvic and back discomfort, sleep and day-to-day movement. Treatment can sit alongside pelvic health physiotherapy and your usual maternity care.

Appointments become less frequent if symptoms settle.

Third trimester · 28 weeks onwards

Prepare for what comes next

Support for comfort and rest, assessment for breech moxibustion where appropriate, and birth preparation from around 36 weeks.

We adapt the plan to your maternity recommendations and birth preferences.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your initial consultation and treatment allow time to discuss your pregnancy, gestation, scan findings, medication, previous pregnancies and current symptoms. Bring relevant maternity information and tell us about any complications or advice from your midwife.

We explain your options, likely costs and a review point before starting. Treatment uses fine, sterile, single-use needles, with positioning and stimulation adapted to your comfort. You can ask questions or pause at any time.

Progress might mean fewer hours of nausea, easier turns in bed, more comfortable walking or better rest. We use these changes to decide whether to continue, adjust or recommend other care.

Your pregnancy care options

Focused symptom support

Personalised acupuncture

A course based on your main concern, such as nausea or pelvic girdle pain. We review your response early and space appointments out as symptoms improve.

You can begin at any stage after assessment; there is no requirement to wait until 12 weeks.

Ongoing support

Continuity through pregnancy

For women who value regular support across pregnancy, including those moving from fertility treatment into maternity care. Your plan changes with each trimester and may include birth preparation or appropriate referrals.

Additional appointments, referrals and costs are discussed with you before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have acupuncture in pregnancy?

There is no single schedule. More frequent appointments may be discussed for active symptoms, with longer gaps once they improve. Some women choose weekly birth preparation from around 36 weeks. We agree an initial review point so you can judge the value of further care.

Can I have acupuncture alongside my maternity care?

Yes, following an individual assessment. Acupuncture is complementary to antenatal appointments, medication, scans and obstetric advice. Tell your maternity team about complementary treatment and keep us updated about changes in your pregnancy.

What if my pregnancy is more complex?

We assess suitability individually and may ask you to discuss treatment with your obstetric team. Acupuncture does not replace care for conditions such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes or threatened preterm labour.

For bleeding, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movements, a severe headache with visual changes, or feeling acutely unwell, contact maternity triage promptly rather than waiting for an acupuncture appointment.
