Life and Lemons Clinic Sheffield Lemon Outline

Why choose Life + Lemons for fertility acupuncture?

Founder and Lead Acupuncturist Kimberley combines her training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, electro-acupuncture and specialist fertility support with a detailed review of your fertility history.

We look at your cycle alongside pain, bleeding, sleep, previous investigations and any assisted-conception schedule. For example, if you are trying to conceive while managing painful periods, we discuss both concerns together, rather than treating fertility as a separate issue.

Your recommendation explains the purpose of treatment, how appointments fit around your circumstances and what we will review. Where your history raises questions for your GP or fertility team, we help you prepare for that conversation.

A clear plan, with ongoing review

You should understand what we recommend, why we recommend it and what it will cost.

Together, we agree a plan that considers your circumstances, preferences and any fertility treatment schedule. Regular reviews give us an opportunity to discuss your experience and decide whether to continue, adapt or finish care.

Wider support when you need it

Acupuncture may be one part of your care. Where appropriate, we can connect you with nutritional therapy or other qualified professionals.

Any additional services, investigations or products are discussed with you first, including their purpose, limitations and cost.

Our aim is for you to feel heard, informed and supported, with a clearer understanding of your next steps.

Our 2024 clinic review: the outcomes recorded

We believe in sharing our clinic observations transparently, including where outcomes remain unknown.

Our 2024 review recorded the following outcomes among fertility patients attending Life + Lemons:

  • 22% were recorded in the natural conception category.

  • 39% were recorded in the IVF conception category.

  • 4% conceived and subsequently experienced miscarriage.

  • 13% were recorded as not having conceived or having discontinued care.

  • 22% had an unknown outcome.

These figures describe our clinic records. They are not verified live birth rates, do not demonstrate that acupuncture caused pregnancy and cannot predict your individual chance of conceiving. Fertility outcomes depend on many factors, including medical treatment and individual circumstances.

Whatever your outcome or route to parenthood, our commitment remains the same: thoughtful, personalised care that complements your medical treatment and gives you space to feel supported.

Fertility Success Statistics 2024

What role can acupuncture play in fertility care?

Acupuncture involves placing fine needles at selected points on the body. We offer it as complementary care alongside your existing fertility treatment and support team.

What this means
The uterine lining changes through the cycle as it prepares for implantation. Ultrasound findings, hormone exposure and your fertility treatment protocol help your medical team assess it.

How acupuncture may help
Research reports changes in lining thickness and uterine blood-flow measurements. These are promising findings, although a change in these measurements does not establish a higher live birth rate.

Your care at Life + Lemons
We consider scan results, cycle timing and medication when planning acupuncture alongside your fertility team. We explain the purpose of appointments and review the wider picture, including pain, sleep and wellbeing.

What your cycle can tell us
Changes in cycle length, bleeding or ovulation timing can offer useful clues about reproductive health. We look at the pattern over time, alongside diagnoses, medication and investigations.

How acupuncture may help
Trials in women with polycystic ovary syndrome have explored ovulation and hormone changes with repeated acupuncture. Findings vary, so we set individual goals around symptoms and wellbeing rather than promise a particular hormone result.

Your care at Life + Lemons
We review your cycle diary and existing tests, plan treatment around your circumstances and help you identify questions for your GP or fertility team. Nutrition support may be recommended when it fits your needs.

What you may notice
Waiting for results, tracking cycles and managing appointments can leave you feeling on edge, struggling to sleep or finding it difficult to switch off.

How acupuncture may help
A systematic review found modest relief of IVF-related anxiety following acupuncture. Feeling calmer and more supported is a worthwhile treatment goal in its own right.

Your care at Life + Lemons
Appointments give you space to talk, settle into treatment and review sleep, tension and coping. We can coordinate with nutritional or psychological support when useful.

Why the partner picture matters
Semen analysis assesses factors such as sperm concentration, movement and shape. Results need interpretation in context, with further assessment where appropriate.

What research is exploring
Small studies have examined acupuncture and semen measurements, but evidence remains limited. We discuss this honestly so you can make an informed decision about complementary support.

Your care at Life + Lemons
We consider sleep, stress and everyday health alongside existing fertility investigations. We can help you prepare questions for your fertility team or andrologist and connect you with appropriate nutritional support.

Pre-conception acupuncture support and preparation

You can begin with where you are now, whether you are preparing to try, have been trying for some time or already have a fertility treatment date.

At your first appointment, bring any recent results, medication details and your clinic schedule if you have them. We use these alongside your cycle history and priorities to agree practical next steps.

For example, we may plan appointments around a treatment cycle while reviewing sleep, stress and period symptoms. We agree what to track and when to review, so your plan responds to your experience.

Acupuncture for Fertility

Fertility acupuncture: frequently asked questions

We’ve included below answers to the most common questions we receive from our patients. If you still have questions, please get in touch via email at [email protected].

Acupuncture is a gentle, holistic therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, or “Qi.” For fertility, acupuncture aims to harmonise the body’s systems, regulate hormonal balance, improve blood flow to reproductive organs, and reduce stress, all of which can support conception.

Supporting Study: A study published in The Journal of Reproductive Medicine found that acupuncture was effective for improving fertility in women with unexplained infertility, leading to higher pregnancy rates (source: Unexplained Infertility Treated with Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine)

Acupuncture can:

  • Regulate menstrual cycles and enhance ovulation.

  • Improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, promoting egg quality and a healthy uterine lining.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact fertility.

  • Support male fertility by improving sperm quality and motility.

  • Balance thyroid function, which is crucial for reproductive health.

Supporting Study:  A study published in Fertility and Sterility found that acupuncture can enhance ovarian blood flow, contributing to better egg quality and higher pregnancy rates in women undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF) (Source: The Impact of Acupuncture on Uterine Artery Impedance and Egg Quality in Women Trying to Conceive)

It’s beneficial to begin acupuncture 3–4 months before trying to conceive, whether naturally or through assisted reproductive technologies like IVF or IUI. This timeframe allows for optimal regulation of the menstrual cycle and improvement in reproductive health.

Supporting Study:  A study published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews reviewed the effectiveness of acupuncture in IVF patients and found that starting acupuncture prior to IVF could improve pregnancy rates (source: The effects of acupuncture on pregnancy outcomes of in vitro fertilisation)

For natural conception, weekly sessions are recommended.

During IVF or IUI cycles, treatments may increase to 2 times per week, especially during the stimulation phase and around embryo transfer. Continuing sessions during the two-week wait and early pregnancy can support implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

Supporting Study: A study in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that frequent acupuncture (2–3 times per week) during IVF cycles improved clinical pregnancy rates, especially around the time of embryo transfer (source: The effects of acupuncture on pregnancy outcomes of in vitro fertilisation)

Acupuncture is generally painless. The needles used are very thin, and most clients experience only a mild sensation such as tingling or a dull ache upon insertion. Many people find acupuncture relaxing and often fall asleep during their sessions.

Yes, acupuncture can enhance fertility by improving hormonal balance, menstrual regularity, and overall reproductive health. Many individuals have successfully conceived naturally after acupuncture treatments, even following unsuccessful IVF or IUI attempts.

Supporting Study: A study in The Journal of Reproductive Medicine found that acupuncture improved fertility in women who had previously experienced unexplained infertility, leading to a higher conception rate (source: Acupuncture Improves Fertility in Unexplained Infertility).

Acupuncture is considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a qualified practitioner. It can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts such as nausea, fatigue, and back pain, and may reduce the risk of miscarriage when used in early pregnancy.

Supporting Study: A review in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine indicated that acupuncture during pregnancy is safe and effective for managing common pregnancy symptoms like nausea and anxiety (source: The Safety of Acupuncture during Pregnancy).

We have a very comprehensive post dedicated to acupuncture during pregnancy on our blog, broken down into trimesters and more FAQs. Feel free to go ahead and read it here.

During your initial consultation, your acupuncturist will review your medical history, discuss your fertility goals, and assess your overall health. The treatment involves lying down while fine needles are inserted into specific points on your body.

Initial sessions can last between 90-60 minutes depending on which of our practitioners you book with, and many clients report feeling relaxed afterward.

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist. Potential side effects are rare but may include slight bruising, dizziness, or temporary fatigue. It’s important to inform your acupuncturist of any medical conditions or medications you’re taking.

Supporting Study: A review in The Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies found that acupuncture has minimal risks when performed by trained professionals, with side effects usually being mild and short-lived (source: Safety of Acupuncture).

Look for a licensed acupuncturist with experience in reproductive health. Certifications from recognized bodies, such as the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), indicate professional standards. Personal referrals and online reviews can also guide your choice.
