Sciatica + leg pain: understanding the pattern
Sciatica describes symptoms caused by irritation or compression of a nerve, often with pain travelling into one leg. Tingling, numbness or weakness may also occur. It is different from back pain that stays around the spine.
We ask about the distribution of symptoms, how long they have been present, changes in strength or sensation and any previous assessment. This helps us consider appropriate treatment and when further medical review is needed.
How might acupuncture help sciatica?
Research shows improvements in leg pain and movement with acupuncture
A 2024 clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine provides encouraging evidence for acupuncture for chronic sciatica caused by a herniated disc. Among 216 participants analysed, leg-pain scores fell by approximately 31 points out of 100 after four weeks of acupuncture, compared with 15 points following sham treatment. Disability also improved, indicating less interference with everyday activities.
Participants received 10 treatments over four weeks. Benefits compared with sham treatment appeared from week two and remained detectable at the one-year follow-up. These findings support acupuncture as a treatment option for this particular type of sciatica.
Acupuncture influences how the nervous system processes pain
Acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves, sending signals into the spinal cord and brain that can activate the body’s own pain-inhibiting pathways. Research implicates naturally occurring opioids, including endorphins, alongside other chemical messengers involved in regulating pain.
This offers a biological explanation for how acupuncture may reduce sciatic pain. Its role is to influence pain processing; it does not physically move a disc back into place or mechanically release a compressed nerve.
Why inflammation and nerve sensitivity matter
Sciatic pain can involve both nerve compression and inflammation around an irritated nerve root. Persistent irritation can also make pain pathways more sensitive, contributing to shooting, burning or electric-shock sensations.
Experimental research, much of it in animals, suggests acupuncture and electroacupuncture can influence inflammatory signalling and the activity of cells involved in nerve-pain sensitivity. These are promising explanations for its effects, although the precise mechanisms in people with sciatica are still being established.
How we can help
At Life + Lemons, we connect this research with your experience: where the pain travels, which positions aggravate it and how it affects walking, sitting and sleep. We tailor treatment and review these practical measures of progress, alongside appropriate movement advice and referral where needed.
What to expect from your Sheffield appointment
Your first appointment includes health history, medication, symptom assessment and your goals. Where treatment is appropriate, we explain the options and use fine, sterile, single-use needles.
Can I continue physiotherapy?
Absolutely. We just ask that you tell us about your rehabilitation plan so treatment can fit with your wider care, for an integrative approach to pain management and rehabilitation.
New difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or bottom, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs needs emergency assessment.
