Can acupuncture help anxiety?
Anxiety may affect sleep, concentration, digestion and how comfortable you feel in your body. You might notice a racing mind, tight muscles or difficulty relaxing even when you have time to rest.
We explore your symptom pattern, health history and what you hope to change. Acupuncture can form part of an individual approach to relaxation and wellbeing, alongside any psychological or medical support you use.
How does acupuncture help anxiety?
What did studies of generalised anxiety find?
A 2021 systematic review included 20 randomised trials, all involving people with generalised anxiety disorder. It found lower anxiety scores with acupuncture than the comparison treatments. Most studies were published in Chinese, and the authors called for more high-quality trials.
Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?
Anxiety can involve a racing heart, sweating, shaking, digestive symptoms and difficulty sleeping. We ask when these occur and how they affect you. New palpitations, breathlessness or other persistent physical symptoms should also be assessed medically.
Is anxiety affecting your sleep?
Lying awake worrying and waking repeatedly can reinforce daytime fatigue and make symptoms harder to manage. We ask about sleep onset, waking and daytime functioning. Our sleep page explains what insomnia trials measured and when further assessment is useful.
Acupuncture for anxiety: what the research says
Systematic reviews of clinical trials report reductions in anxiety symptom scores with acupuncture. Variations in study design, sample size and treatment methods mean the certainty of the findings is limited.
We discuss the evidence in context and build treatment around your needs and response.
