Integrated healthcare
Hay fever + allergic rhinitis
Hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis, a reaction to pollen that can cause sneezing, an itchy or runny nose, congestion and watery eyes. Symptoms that persist throughout the year may involve other triggers, such as dust mites.
We ask when symptoms occur, which treatments you use and how much your sleep and daily life are affected. This gives us a baseline for discussing treatment and reviewing any change.
Can acupuncture help hay fever?
What did the trial find?
A randomised trial involving 422 people with pollen allergy compared acupuncture plus rescue medication with sham acupuncture plus medication and medication alone. The acupuncture group had better allergy-related quality-of-life and rescue-medication scores after eight weeks.
How much treatment was studied?
That trial provided 12 treatments over eight weeks. It supports looking at a planned course rather than assuming one appointment prevents symptoms throughout the pollen season. The improvement in quality-of-life score over sham was 0.5 points.
Can I still use antihistamines?
The trial allowed cetirizine as rescue medication. Tell us about your antihistamines, nasal sprays and any asthma treatment. A pharmacist or GP can advise on using these effectively and on any medication changes.
How might acupuncture affect allergy symptoms?
Researchers are investigating changes in immune and inflammatory signalling. A sham-controlled study of persistent allergic rhinitis examined IgE, substance P and symptoms. These are proposed biological pathways, not evidence that acupuncture removes the underlying allergy.

What to expect from your Sheffield appointment
Your first appointment includes your allergy history, symptoms, medication and goals. Where appropriate, treatment uses fine, sterile, single-use needles and is adapted to your comfort.
When should I book?
Bring information about when your symptoms usually start and which pollen or other triggers affect you. We discuss a realistic schedule and review nasal symptoms, medication use and sleep disruption.
Wheezing or breathlessness needs medical assessment. Acupuncture for hay fever does not replace an asthma treatment plan.
