Is your heel pain plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis typically causes pain under the heel or along the arch. It is often worse when you first walk after sleep or rest, eases with initial movement, then becomes more painful with prolonged standing, walking or running.
Not every painful heel has the same cause. We ask about recent changes in activity, footwear, injury and symptoms such as numbness or swelling. An appropriate assessment helps guide the next steps.
Can acupuncture help plantar fasciitis?
What did the review find?
A systematic review identified four randomised studies. They reported short-term pain improvements using pain and disability scales. Benefits were observed over four to eight weeks; the evidence was insufficient to establish a lasting benefit.
How might it work?
Needling stimulates sensory nerves and can engage pain-modulating pathways. For plantar heel pain, the clinical aim is to ease discomfort and support your participation in loading and rehabilitation.
What else helps heel pain?
NHS advice includes cushioned footwear with arch support, insoles or heel pads where useful, and gentle stretching of the sole and heel. Discuss changes in activity and a rehabilitation plan with your clinician.
What should improve during treatment?
First-step pain, how long you can stand or walk, and the effect on work or exercise are useful measures. We establish these at the start and review them.
Acupuncture research for plantar fasciitis is smaller than the evidence base for some other pain conditions. We explain what the trials found and agree a review point.
