Tinnitus: understanding your symptoms
Tinnitus is hearing sound without an external source. It can occur with hearing loss or other ear problems, and its impact varies. An ear and hearing assessment helps identify appropriate care.
We ask when it began, whether it affects one or both ears, whether it follows your heartbeat and how it affects sleep, concentration and daily life. Bring details of any audiology or ENT assessment.
Can acupuncture help tinnitus?
What does the research show?
A 2025 review of scalp-acupuncture studies included 20 trials and 1,430 participants. It reported improvements in tinnitus measures, but the certainty of evidence ranged from moderate to low and results varied between studies. This does not establish a reliable cure.
What might explain an effect?
Researchers propose changes in nervous-system signalling, but the mechanisms for tinnitus remain uncertain. Benefits shown for acupuncture in other conditions cannot simply be assumed to apply to tinnitus.
Which outcomes matter?
Tinnitus loudness and the distress it causes are different outcomes. We ask separately about sound, sleep, concentration and daily interference so any change is described accurately.
What other tinnitus support is available?
NICE recommends assessment, information and support, with hearing aids where hearing loss affects communication and tinnitus-focused psychological therapy where distress persists. Your GP or audiology team can guide access.
Our consultation can explore associated tension and sleep difficulties alongside your existing care. We discuss whether acupuncture is appropriate for your needs.

What to expect from your Sheffield appointment
Your first appointment includes health history, medication and previous hearing investigations. We explain what treatment can reasonably aim to address and agree a review point.
When should tinnitus be checked urgently?
Tinnitus with sudden hearing loss, facial weakness or a spinning sensation needs urgent assessment. Sound that beats with your pulse also requires prompt medical review. Persistent one-sided or changing symptoms should be assessed.
Tell us about disrupted sleep or anxiety so these can be considered as distinct concerns.
