How Do I Know If I Have a Hormonal Imbalance?

October 30, 2026

Understanding your symptoms and finding a clear next step

You feel tired, your patience is thinner than usual and your cycle has become unpredictable. Perhaps you have been told it is stress. Perhaps a blood test came back normal. You still want to understand why you do not feel like yourself.

You cannot confirm a hormonal imbalance from symptoms alone. Persistent changes in your periods, temperature regulation, skin or wellbeing can be reasons to seek assessment. Your age, cycle pattern, medication and medical history help a clinician decide whether hormone tests or other investigations are useful.

What does “hormonal imbalance” actually mean?

It is a broad phrase people use to describe symptoms they suspect are hormone-related. It is not a single diagnosis. The useful question is which process might be involved, what else could explain your symptoms and what would change your care.

Hormones naturally fluctuate. Having symptoms at a particular stage of your cycle does not automatically mean your oestrogen or progesterone is too high or too low. Equally, being told that fluctuations are normal does not mean you have to put up with symptoms that disrupt your life.

Which symptoms deserve attention?

A lasting change from your usual pattern matters more than matching an online checklist. Notice whether your periods have become unpredictable, whether mood changes follow a monthly pattern, or whether night sweats and disturbed sleep are appearing together.

Irregular cycles can occur with contraception, stress, substantial weight changes, perimenopause, thyroid problems or PMOS. The NHS recommends discussing irregular periods or a changed pattern with your GP. [1]

Fatigue, brain fog and hair changes are less specific. They can have several explanations. Trying to fit them all into one hormonal label can make it harder to identify what you actually need.

Can I have hormonal symptoms with regular periods?

Yes. A predictable cycle does not exclude significant premenstrual symptoms. PMS is assessed partly through its timing: symptoms arise before a period and improve afterwards. Keeping daily records for at least two cycles can make this pattern clearer. [2]

At Life + Lemons, we ask about the whole month. Feeling well for two weeks and struggling for the next two is a different pattern from feeling exhausted every day. Both deserve attention, but they may lead to different questions.

Will a blood test give me the answer?

Sometimes, but there is no universal blood test that explains every symptom described as hormonal. A test is most useful when there is a specific clinical question behind it.

For example, NICE recommends identifying perimenopause in otherwise healthy people aged 45 or over with typical symptoms without routine hormone testing. A normal result should not be used on its own to dismiss that symptom pattern. [3]

If you have already had tests, bring the results, dates and any information about medication or cycle timing to your appointment. That is more useful than being told simply that everything was “fine”.

The Life + Lemons approach: joining the dots

At our women’s health clinic in Nether Edge, Sheffield, we explore your cycle alongside pain, sleep, digestion, energy, stress and fertility goals. We ask what changed first, what happens together and what has already been investigated.

That wider picture guides a personalised support plan. Acupuncture or electroacupuncture may be considered for appropriate symptom goals, with nutritional therapy or medical referral discussed where relevant. We explain the purpose of each recommendation and review your response.

Our whole-person approach means taking symptoms seriously and keeping the plan specific. It does not mean assuming every symptom has the same cause or promising that acupuncture will correct an unidentified hormone disorder.

Feeling heard matters too

“I felt like I was finally being heard”

Laura shared this in her account of care for menstrual pain and anxiety. Read Laura’s full story. Her experience is personal and does not establish that treatment corrects hormone levels or predict anyone else’s results.

Where should I start?

Try our Hormonal Health Quiz to reflect on your cycle and symptoms. If pelvic pain, bowel or bladder symptoms are part of the picture, our free Pelvic Health Assessment can help you organise those concerns. These are educational tools, not diagnostic tests.

Book a GP appointment if symptoms persist, worsen or affect your daily life. Unusual bleeding between periods or after sex should be checked; bleeding after menopause also needs medical assessment. [4,5]
