Your first appointment and personalised care at Life + Lemons
Fertility acupuncture uses fine needles as part of supportive care for people trying to conceive naturally or undergoing fertility treatment. At Life + Lemons, it starts with understanding your health and agreeing what you want help with, followed by a personalised treatment plan and regular review.
You might be exploring it before your first fertility appointment, preparing for IVF or looking for support after a difficult cycle. Wherever you are, the first question is what would make care useful to you.
Who might consider fertility acupuncture?
People come to our Sheffield clinic for different reasons. Some want space to manage the emotional demands of trying to conceive. Others want support alongside IVF, or have symptoms such as painful periods that they want to discuss in the context of their fertility plans.
We also meet people who feel they have collected lots of information without a clear sense of what to do next. A consultation gives us time to organise that picture and identify where medical or other professional input is needed.
Having a diagnosis does not automatically mean acupuncture is the right option. Your priorities, medical care, preferences and budget all matter.
What happens at the first appointment?
We ask about your menstrual cycle, pain, bleeding, sleep, digestion and the impact of trying to conceive. We also discuss relevant diagnoses, medication, investigations and previous fertility treatment.
If you have results or correspondence you would like to discuss, bring them with you. We can help you prepare questions about them, while diagnosis and decisions about fertility medication remain with the appropriate medical team.
We explain the proposed acupuncture treatment and agree what we will review. You should have room to ask questions and make an informed choice before proceeding.
What does the acupuncture involve?
Very fine needles are placed at selected points. Needles can produce sensations such as a brief prick, dull ache or tingling. Tell your practitioner if anything feels uncomfortable so treatment can be adjusted.
Electroacupuncture uses a small electrical current between selected needles. It is an option requiring its own suitability assessment, rather than something everyone needs. [1]
Tell us about medication, bleeding disorders, implanted electrical devices and any possibility of pregnancy. Minor effects such as bruising can occur; safe technique and an appropriately trained practitioner matter. [1]
Why do we ask about symptoms beyond fertility?
Because trying to conceive happens within the rest of your life.
Pain may be affecting sex. Broken sleep may be making appointments harder to manage. Digestive symptoms may be restricting what you eat. Understanding these concerns helps us agree relevant goals and recognise when another clinician should be involved.
For example, significant period pain alongside difficulty conceiving deserves attention. Acupuncture support should not become a reason to postpone investigation of possible endometriosis or another cause.
How is treatment planned around your cycle or IVF?
We use your current stage to organise care: trying naturally, preparing for treatment, undergoing stimulation, approaching transfer or recovering between cycles.
This helps us keep appointments relevant to your symptoms and timetable. It does not mean a particular acupuncture point or appointment day has been proven to secure implantation.
We may recommend a period of regular appointments, then review whether the plan is useful and manageable. We do not want you to feel you must complete a course before accessing fertility treatment.
How will you know whether it is helping?
We agree goals that can be discussed and revisited. These might include how anxious you feel around appointments, the impact of symptoms or whether you feel clearer about your next steps.
Pregnancy matters deeply, but it cannot tell us on its own how much any one element of care contributed. For a fuller explanation, read Fertility Acupuncture: Does It Really Work?.
What is different about Life + Lemons?
Our approach brings fertility and pelvic health into the same conversation. We take time to explore the symptoms you may have been putting up with, how they fit with your history and what questions remain unanswered.
We build a plan around you, explain the purpose of our recommendations and revisit them. Where nutrition, pelvic health physiotherapy or medical assessment may be useful, we discuss that openly rather than assuming acupuncture should do everything.
