Fertility acupuncture for natural conception and IVF: understanding your options
When you are trying to conceive, it can feel as though every decision comes with another question. Should you change your diet? Ask for another test? Try acupuncture? And how do you decide what is actually worth your time?
Fertility acupuncture is acupuncture offered alongside natural conception or fertility treatment. It may help some people manage anxiety during IVF, but it has not been established as a reliable way to increase live birth rates. Claims about improving egg quality, balancing hormones or thickening the uterine lining need careful interpretation.
At Life + Lemons in Sheffield, we believe you deserve both a clear explanation of the evidence and a thoughtful plan for your care.
What is fertility acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into selected points on the body. Some treatments use gentle electrical stimulation through the needles, known as electroacupuncture. Your practitioner should explain the proposed treatment and assess whether it is appropriate for you. [1]
In a fertility setting, the consultation also matters. Understanding your cycle, symptoms, investigations and treatment history helps us identify what you want support with and which questions need to go back to your GP or fertility team.
How might acupuncture work?
Research suggests acupuncture can influence nervous system activity and the body’s responses to pain. The mechanisms are still being investigated. A biological effect does not automatically mean a treatment improves conception or live birth. [1]
That distinction is particularly useful when reading claims about fertility. A change in a hormone measurement or blood flow marker is a different outcome from having a baby.
Does acupuncture improve IVF success?
Studies have produced differing results, and the comparison group matters. Acupuncture versus no additional care asks a different question from acupuncture versus a sham procedure.
One important randomised trial published in JAMA in 2018 found no statistically significant live birth advantage from the acupuncture protocol studied during ovarian stimulation and embryo transfer. Live birth rates were 18.3% with acupuncture and 17.8% with sham acupuncture. [2]
This does not answer every question about every treatment schedule. It does mean we should not tell you that adding acupuncture will reliably make IVF work, or that a longer programme has been proven to overcome that finding.
Can it help with the emotional experience of IVF?
A secondary analysis from the same trial found a small reduction in anxiety around embryo transfer with acupuncture. Overall quality of life did not differ between groups. [3]
Feeling supported is a worthwhile goal in its own right. It should never come with the suggestion that you must be calm for treatment to succeed. An unsuccessful cycle is not evidence that you were too stressed or did something wrong.
Can acupuncture improve egg quality?
Acupuncture has not been established as a treatment that improves egg quality or reverses age-related changes in eggs.
When someone is worried about egg quality, we start by asking what prompted that concern. Was it a discussion after egg collection, fertilisation results, embryo development or a test result? These are different pieces of information and deserve an individual conversation with the fertility team.
We can help you organise those questions and consider your wider wellbeing without promising to change an outcome that remains uncertain.
Can acupuncture thicken the uterine lining or balance hormones?
Neither phrase should be treated as a guaranteed fertility benefit. Research exploring reproductive mechanisms is not enough to establish that acupuncture corrects a thin lining or hormonal disorder and thereby improves live birth.
A persistently thin lining, absent periods or unpredictable ovulation needs medical assessment. At Life + Lemons, we want to understand what has already been investigated and support you alongside that care.
How we approach fertility support at Life + Lemons
Our starting point is your story: how long you have been trying, what your cycle is like, whether pain is part of the picture, what investigations have happened and how the process is affecting everyday life.
We then agree priorities. These might include managing treatment-related anxiety, monitoring symptoms, making sense of cycle patterns or preparing questions for your next appointment. Acupuncture can sit within that plan, with nutrition or other professional input considered where relevant.
Our phased approach gives us opportunities to review your experience over time. It provides continuity, rather than a promise that a particular number of sessions will produce pregnancy.
What does our 61% conception figure mean?
Our published 2024 clinic review recorded conception in 61% of the fertility patients included. Of the whole group, 22% conceived naturally and 39% conceived alongside IVF or other fertility treatment. Treatment was weekly over an average of 16 weeks. [4]
These are observational clinic figures, not the results of a controlled trial. They do not show that acupuncture caused those pregnancies, predict your personal chances or represent a live birth rate. We share them as a record of outcomes during care.
When should you seek fertility investigations?
The NHS advises speaking to your GP after a year of trying without success, or sooner if you are 36 or over or already have a reason to be concerned about your fertility. Acupuncture should sit alongside appropriate assessment. [5]
