Acupuncture for Perimenopause: Benefits, Evidence and Your Options

Individual support for changing symptoms, with clear expectations

Perhaps you are waking at 3am, feeling unlike yourself or noticing that your periods have changed. You may not be sure whether this is perimenopause, and you may want support beyond another list of symptoms.

Acupuncture is a complementary option some people choose during perimenopause. Research on hot flushes has found benefits compared with no acupuncture, but not consistent benefit over sham acupuncture. It should be considered with realistic goals alongside a discussion of established treatment options. [1]

Can acupuncture help hot flushes and night sweats?

There are encouraging patient experiences, but the comparison in a study matters. Feeling better after a course of care does not establish how much benefit comes from the needling itself. The NCCIH summary reports no advantage over sham acupuncture for menopausal hot flushes in the evidence it reviewed. [1]

If you choose to try acupuncture, agree how to assess benefit: frequency of waking, severity of episodes or their disruption to daily life. Improvement should be something you can describe.

What about sleep, mood and other symptoms?

These concerns deserve individual attention. A person waking because of night sweats may need a different conversation from someone kept awake by pelvic pain or anxiety.

At Life + Lemons, we ask which symptoms are new, when they occur and what affects them. We do not assume that every symptom in midlife is caused by perimenopause or that acupuncture helps all symptoms equally.

Do I need hormone tests first?

Not necessarily. NICE recommends identifying perimenopause clinically in otherwise healthy people aged 45 or over with typical symptoms, without routine hormone testing. Younger age or a less typical presentation may lead to a different assessment. [2]

A consultation with your GP can help explore the diagnosis and rule out other explanations where relevant. Do not wait for an abnormal hormone result before asking for help.

Can I have acupuncture alongside HRT?

Using HRT does not automatically rule out acupuncture. We assess your medical history, medication and suitability, and discuss the intended role of care. Your prescriber remains responsible for HRT decisions.

Acupuncture should not be presented as equivalent to replacing hormones or as a reason to stop prescribed treatment.

What if I want natural perimenopause treatment?

Begin with your priorities and preferences. Practical changes around sleep, comfortable physical activity and nutrition may form part of a wider plan. “Natural” products still need safety checks, especially when you take medicines. [3]

You can also discuss HRT and non-hormonal options with a clinician. Menopause-specific CBT is among the recognised options for relevant symptoms. [2,4] Wanting complementary support does not mean you must avoid medical treatment.

The Life + Lemons approach in Sheffield

We consider cycle changes alongside sleep, energy, digestion, mood, pelvic symptoms and your health history. We ask what you need help with most, rather than expect you to work through a generic wellness routine.

Acupuncture or electroacupuncture may be discussed for appropriate goals, with nutritional therapy or another assessment considered where relevant. We explain why we recommend each part and review what changes.

For example, we may track the nights disturbed by symptoms, ability to concentrate at work or the effect of pain on activity. If the plan is not helping, we reconsider it with you.

What if pelvic symptoms are changing too?

New pain, bleeding or urinary symptoms should not simply be labelled perimenopause. Seek medical advice for persistent changes; bleeding after menopause needs assessment.

Our free Pelvic Health Assessment can help organise pelvic symptoms, and our Hormonal Health Quiz supports reflection on cyclical changes. Neither diagnoses perimenopause.
